LITTLE BOY BLUE AT FOUR DAYS OLD

NOTES

The year is still young, so I thought to show you
my first attempt of painting a baby,
one of my grand children, here "Four Days Old."
Last year Sept. he went to Kindergarden,
and did not want to go back home!

The measurements with babies are different -
their heads are 1/5th of their height.
shadows give form to the face
and make the cheek and forehead look larger

The color of the "Little Boy Blue"
was still very red at the time, and his limbs long!
He's laying on a round green inflatable pillow.
which was a perfect backdrop
for the fiercely red of the face.

When attempting a new subject
I often venture out in pastel. With this  painting medium,
which is like colored chalk sticks (am not referring to light colors)
I use my drawing skill as a safety blanket :)

my next new venture would be to paint a child
between 6 and 12 years old

  3. I love the shades you used for his skin, and you captured that spiky baby hair perfectly.

    1. Bee, thanks for visiting here! Enjoyed reading all the comments you got about the irritating titles:):)
I exaggerated the features of the spiky hair and the red face, and am glad I did, for that disappeared with the following years:)

  4. Not having seen the child, I think you did an excellent job. I love art, especially oils. I have several and a few watercolors. I did not paint them.

  11. Beautiful! You did a wonderful job. Do you take a picture first and go from there, or did you do the main part when he was asleep? I sure wish that I could draw.

    1. i started when he was asleep and finished at home with his photo -so it's like I would do a landscape painting. I like it when people ask specific questions!

Do you know that drawing is practicing blood, sweat and tears? Most artists would say it's 98% practice and 2% talent, so actually anyone could become an artist (and many do in their later years of life)

  18. A lovely pastel portrait, it is said that baby portraits are the most difficult to paint to get the look of a baby. You have done it very well.
